A FLEXIBLE PROGRAM

VALUES/AIMS OF THE PRE PREP

  1. Self Esteem:  Children are encouraged to feel positive about themselves and the things they do.

  2. Independence:  Your child needs to develop the ability to make his/her decision about what to do or say and to be aware of the various implications of these decisions.

  3. Cooperation:  It is important for your child to work with others developing understanding and sensitivity towards people and learn to help and seek help from others.

  4. Health:  Children need to be properly fed and clothed to be physically fit to feel safe in their environment.

  5. Friendship:  Children need to establish friendships and to play, work and learn with people they like.

  6. Justice and Social Concern:  Children need to learn to make decisions and practice behaviour that demonstrates a sense of fairness towards themselves and others.  They need to do this in a way that shows concerns for other’s rights, the property of others and the environment.

The core values enable staff to develop a range of aims for children during the year.  Specific aims are also established for individual children based on their particular developmental needs.  The implementation of our general and specific aims are achieved through the Pre Prep Program.  As you can see, Pre Prep is not just a place where children learn to paint, play with clay and do puzzles.  It is more importantly, a place where life skills and attitude are formed.

  • We plan experiences based on children’s interests.  This helps children learn through activities they enjoy doing and encourages them to develop and express their own ideas.

  • We provide sensory and open-ended experiences.  Pasting, painting, water, sand, clay, dough, dress-ups, blocks etc. all provide experiences where there is no right or wrong solution.  Children can therefore manipulate and freely explore their surroundings and learn in a non-threatening and positive way.

  • We use language sensitively.  It is important to nurture and build on developing language skills in order to;

    • Allow children to develop an understanding of the concepts held in language

    • Encourage children in their language use

    • Promote individual decision making.

    • Give positive feedback when children exhibit skill development in any field.

  • We constantly assess children’s development.  The program is varied, when necessary, in order to accommodate each child’s emerging developmental skills.  In this way, the child’s strengths and weaknesses can be identified in relation to the group as a whole.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

LITTLE FEET MUSIC

Music is a very important part of the program at Little Paddington.  Twice weekly, a specialist teacher – Rachel -  attends the centre and takes each group for a music session.  The children are entranced as they explore the magic of sound, rhythm and movement

COMPUTERS

Our specially designed computer program for four to five year olds allows the children to enjoy literature through interactive storytelling.  As children use the computer they will develop pre reading and pre writing skills. The program also encourages exploration, discovery, creativity and logical thinking.

AEROBICS

The aerobics program is conducted by a qualified physical education teacher.. Throughout the session, children work through a series of activities incorporating dance, movement, rhythm and gymnastics.

TENNIS

Once a week we hold a ‘Tennis the MenACE’ program.  The program develops physical skills such as hand-eye coordination, balance, movement, projection, reception, tracking and special awareness.

KARATE

Rob, a qualified Karate Instructor will conduct karate movement activities with the children once a week. Karate aims to enhance the children’s balance, co-ordination and to improve their gross motor skills whilst still having fun.
